MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree or higher with proper certification as required by the Professional Standards Commission. Twelve years in education; five years in an administrative position preferred.  Understanding of special education programming, special education rules and regulations and due process as it pertains to special education.

 

GOAL

Provides specialized District leadership through comprehensive planning, coordination, and implementation of the special education services within the various school units of the District, in compliance with the rules and regulations governing special education in Georgia and in cooperation with the total instructional program; promotes an effective learning environment for all students with disabilities while encouraging program innovations and building close working relationships with families, students, and staff.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports school-level leaders to create appropriate learning environments for all students with disabilities.
  • Works collaboratively with other divisions, departments, and schools to meet District goals and ensure alignment of programs, services, and operations.
  • Assists with program planning and evaluation activities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness for special education teaching and learning.
  • Oversees the development and coordination of special education instructional and assessment practices.
  • Develop LEA Special Education Comprehensive Plan and supporting budgets.
  • Provide professional development opportunities for appropriate special education staff.
  • Represents the District in dealing with outside agencies and organizations concerned with special education.
  • Serve as consultant to central office staff and school administrative staff relative to special education and related issues.
  • Serve as consultant in the development of Individual Education Programs (IEP).
  • Administer system’s compliance with due process regulations.
  • Administer accurate maintenance of student special education records.
  • Serve on system committees as requested.
  • Possess and maintain valid and appropriate license, certificate and/or credential as may be required for this position.
  • Follow work scheduling and attendance requirements in a regular, predictable and punctual manner.
  • Participate in training programs to increase skills and proficiency related to the assignment.
  • Review current developments, literature and technical source information related to job responsibilities.
  • Ensure adherence to safety procedures.
  • Follow federal and state laws, as well as Board policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
